Baba Siri Chand was born in 1494 as the elder son of Guru Nanak, the First Sikh Guru. As a child, he was of contemplative nature, and he became the first person to whom Guru Nanak prescribed the life of an Udasi. In contrast to ascetics who leave the world in order to meditate, an Udasi is a renunciate who lives in the world, maintaining everyday life as well as practicing meditation. Guru Nanak also sent Baba Siri Chand to Srinagar, in Kashmir, where he studied under the sage Pandit Purshotam Das Kaul. He returned to Punjab, and had an extensive and dedicated following, as well as being sought out by the first 6 Sikh Gurus for his wisdom and guidance. Baba Siri Chand lived to the great age of 149.
Baba Virsa Singh – Hailing from the Indian village of Sarawan Bodla, Guru Maharaj Baba Virsa Singh Ji was known as a great spiritual being from the time he was a boy. After meditating under a tree day and night, the great yogi Baba Siri Chand appeared to him and began instructing him in meditation and spiritual life. Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Guru of the Sikh traditional also appeared to him. The miracles surrounding Babaji became well known, and over time he and his disciples established a spiritual community known as Gobind Sadan, or God’s House Without Walls. Maharaj prescribed the practice of Naam Simran, or meditation on the holy word, through the recitation of Jaap Sahib by Guru Gobind Singh, as well as the mantra Ek Ong Kar Sat Nam Siri Wahe Guru, which is the mantra Babaji used to transmit his spiritual energy to his disciples. Babaji left this earth in December, 2007.
Yogi Bhajan – A disciple of Baba Virsa Singh, Yogi Bhajan is best known for bringing kundalini yoga to the west in 1969. He stated as his mission not the creation of followers, but rather the development of teachers. In addition to his role as master of kundalini yoga, Yogiji was also Mahan Tantric, or master of White Tantric yoga, a powerful form of yoga using a specific energy he controlled. Following the path of the ‘householder yogi’ Yogiji established the Yogi Tea Company, as well as a number of other businesses, and excelled as a businessman. Yogi Bhajan established 3HO, or Healthy Happy Holy organization as way to support people in the pursuit of a spiritual lifestyle. He also created teacher training programs for those wishing to become teachers of kundalini yoga. Yogi Bhajan passed away in 2004.
